Lievito Pane degli Angeli means “the yeast bread of angels.” It is a leavening agent infused with (yes, gasp!) artificial vanilla. It is essentially the Italian version of baking powder, and a staple in every Italian baker’s home.
Here in America, it’s a bit harder to come by. Well-stocked Italian markets will carry it, and, as with everything else, you can find it online. However, in case you are an avid baker and always have your preferred ingredients in the pantry, here is a simple conversion into most common ingredients.
For 1 packet of Lievito Pane degli Angeli, use 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
